Health Evangelism And Leadership Training for Him

Key Dates:

Purpose of the HEALTH program:

The purpose of the H.E.A.L.T.H. (Health Evangelism And Leadership Training for Him) evangelism program, is to rapidly train medical missionaries (both professional and lay) to help create centers of influence where Christ-like medical missionary work will lead people to be ready for Christ’s soon return. Graduates will be prepared to function in two key settings:

• Local Churches: Graduates will be equipped to lead a number of types of health programs within the local church setting in a way that can provide them a modest level of support.
• Medical Offices: Students will learn entry-level skills that can be utilized to establish a relationship with patients, which can provide a foundation for spiritual care and outreach.

The HEALTH program, will provide three ways to help accomplish the goal rapid medical missionary training:

1 – Short Term Intensives

In conjunction with the NEWSTART Global initiative, HEALTH offers short-term intensive programs for professionals that provide resources and focused instruction that lasts anywhere from 1-19 days. These short-term courses may also offer CME or CEU credits.

2 – A Four-Month Immersion Program

HEALTH provides a 16-week (four month) live-in training program for those who desire (and who have the appropriate pre-requisite experiences/training) to experience instruction under highly-qualified experts, within the context of a health evangelism cycle. Upon successful completion, students attending this course, will be fully equipped to lead in turning churches, medical and dental offices into “centers of influence” as described by inspired writings in various passages.

Each intensive four-month session ends with a 10-day health-based series specifically designed to lead health contacts into regular attendance in a local Seventh-day Adventist congregation and ultimately baptism.

3 – A 10-Day Health Evangelism Mission Experience

Each session the top graduates of the HEALTH program will be eligible to participate in a unique 10-day international mission experience to a developing nation. Our mission experiences are focused on allowing graduates to treat a high volume of patients with a broad cross-section of medical conditions. One of the primary goals of the mission experience is to equip our students with practical health experiences and medical skills that cannot be readily acquired in other ways.

The curriculum of the four-month immersion program focuses on the four parts of the HEALTH acronym:

Health: Courses in this category focus on the diagnosis, cause and prevention of disease.  These classes consider the leading causes of disease from various angles emphasizing a natural approach toward healing.

Evangelism: Courses in this category focus on the practical delivery of health information for the purpose of winning souls. Most of our time is spent preparing for and delivering actual health seminars for local communities. The student do not just learn theory, they work with instructors to participate in real health evangelism experiences.

And Leadership Training: Courses in this category focus on the skills needed to be a successful leader of health ministries and evangelism in various settings (i.e. the local church, the local community, urban environments, a doctor’s or dentist’s office). In addition business principles and ethics are covered in this category.

for Him: Courses in this category participants focus on the ultimate purpose of all evangelism—leading those who they are ministering to into a saving relationship with the Lord and awareness of His last-day Seventh-day Adventist movement. At the end of each four-month intensive a ten-day evangelistic series is designed and delivered to lead health contacts into regular attendance at a local Seventh-day Adventist congregation and ultimately baptism.

Program Prerequisites

1. Membership in the Seventh-day Adventist church. Applicant must be in good and regular standing.
2. The applicant must completion of one (1) of the following:
• Medical Massage Certificate Course
• Associates Degree in Nursing
• Physicians Assistant
• Respiratory Therapy
• Physical Therapy Assistant
• Dietician or equivalent

1. If the applicant has not completed one of the above, they will need to complete two (2) of the following before acceptance into the program:
• Basic medical terminology course – online (I’ll get you the link)
• Anatomy and Physiology (at least a 3-credit course)

1. In addition, applicants must complete the following reading assignments prior to acceptance in the program:
• Complete a series of lessons with a passing grade, documenting that they are aware of the beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church.
• Read the books, Steps to Christ, and The Sanctified Life, by Ellen White.
• Read Winsome Witnessing, by Gary Gibbs and pass a multiple choice quiz based on the material.
• Read Gaining Decisions for Christ by Louis R. Torres and pass a multiple choice quiz on the material.

Don Mackintosh has a rich history in ministry having worked as a Registered Nurse, a lay Bible worker, a pastor / evangelist, then for five years as the Director of the Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism. For years he has hosted a popular show on 3ABN “Health for a Lifetime” dealing with health issues. He is married and has 4 young children.

To continually improve Weimar College, we are in the process of seeking regional accreditation through WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). This is an extensive process that will require a clearly defined mission as well as systematic processes and evidence that our mission is being lived out in our students. We think it is a good thing to be able to do these things well.

In fact, going through the accreditation process itself will strengthen and refine Weimar College’s focus and enhance our school’s ability to impart true education to our students. Until that process is complete, we are pleased to have good working relationships with many Adventist colleges and universities where many of our students and graduates have gone for further training.

Practical Training

The education you receive from books and lectures begins a process that is completed by practical, hands-on learning. Combining work with liberal arts, science, and religion classes will provide you with cognitive and practical tools to successfully address life’s challenges and opportunities. Work Opportunities

As an integral part of Weimar Center of Health and Education, the College offers its students a variety of work opportunities. Students learn and practice work skills from 8 hours to 16 hours a week in culinary, maintenance, custodial, grounds, and various administrative departments. Students may also work in the academy, the library, and the NEWSTART® 18-day live-in health program managed by physicians and other health professionals, in the health food store and catalog business, the bakery, the Inn, and the farm.

Media Ministry Internship

When it comes to media missionary work, there is no better way to learn than by doing. That’s why Weimar College is offering you the opportunity to work and learn in the Weimar Media Center. You’ll be part of a TV production environment using professional broadcast studio and field equipment.

The Media Ministry Internship is an 11-month certificate program that’s both practical and educational. It will prepare you to lead a church-based media team or outreach project and enable you to produce attractive, high-quality media productions that communicate God’s Word effectively to people. Through assigned readings, studying numerous videos, and the completion of a series of video projects at each level, you will acquire a thorough understanding of the basic elements of video production.

You will experience three different levels of training that progress at your own pace. Your program level determines the benefits you receive while participating in the Media Ministry Internship.

Level 1 – Introductory Training (Approximately 3 months)

• Introduction to TV production
• Graphic design and photography
• Presentation skills – conducting effective screen-based presentations.
• Studio-type camera work
• Benefits- Room Provided

Level 2 – General Training (Approximately 4 months)

• Basic video editing
• Audio – audio board and mic setup, including the handling of common audio problems
• Content delivery – TV, Web & DVD
• Subtitling and Closed Captioning
• Benefits- Room and board provided

Level 3 – Advanced Training (Approximately 4 months)

• Camera – in the field and documentary shooting
• Advanced video editing
• Elements of effective visual composition and motion
• Lighting – setting up lights effectively
• Specialty training based on proficiency in specific areas
• Benefits- Room and board plus a bi-weekly credit of $50 at the Weimar Store

Who Should Apply

Applicants who have successfully completed the four-month AFCOE program or other similar course, such as Souls West, Arise or Mission College of Evangelism, will be given first priority. Applicants should have competence in the use of computers. It would be a plus for students to have experience in media, a media-related education, or musical talents.

Music

The music department of Weimar College is designed “to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble, and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God (Patriarchs and Prophets 594).” It is our goal to employ the gift of music to glorify God, not to exalt self. Through the music courses, we strive to cultivate the musical talents of individuals that they may become musical evangelists, using sacred music as a power to win souls to Christ (Evangelism 504). Currently, courses offered in the music department include College Choir, College Orchestra, and studio instruction in voice, piano, string instruments, and wind instruments. If it is your desire to hone your musical talents for God’s service we invite you to explore the opportunities for growth here at Weimar College.

Health Sciences

Weimar College’s Health Science Department is all about health evangelism. By educating young people to be medical missionaries qualified to work in the world’s best hospitals, or in the poorest village clinic, the department seeks to hasten the Lord’s return.

The Health Sciences Department trains students to serve in medical missionary work at a number of levels – from Certified Massage Therapists, to LVN/RN*, to Doctors (pre-professional training offered). In order to accomplish this, the department offers the traditional science courses needed by those preparing to serve in the medical field. In addition, students also take courses in natural healing remedies, diet and lifestyle-related health challenges, and practical training in health evangelism.

*NURSING UPDATE: Weimar College currently offers pre-nursing classes. In the spring of 2011, Weimar College submitted a feasibility study to the California Board of Registered Nurses (CBRN) to offer an A.S. in Nursing, leading to an R.N. We are pleased to announce that the CBRN has accepted our application, and we are currently working on our self-study. We are working hard to have the program up and running by Fall 2012. Please continue to pray for all of the details to be completed, including lab equipment, faculty, etc.

Religion

The Religion Department seeks to provide solid intellectual development that will equip the student to grasp distinctive biblical truths relevant to Christ and His judgment hour message. The student will also be empowered for active soul-winning through practical training in visitations, Bible studies, and public evangelism. Our commitment is to foster ethical living through the harmonious development of the mind, body, and soul; and to equip the student with a strong biblical foundation within the context of the great controversy.
