Seventh-Day Adventist General Conference President Visits Weimar University, Heralding Comprehensive Health and Mission Integration
WEIMAR, CA – September 21, 2025 – Erton Köhler, President of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) General Conference, recently visited Weimar University, affirming the institution’s vital role as a supporting ministry of the worldwide SDA Church. Accompanied by his wife Adriene and the Assistant to the President, Magdiel Perez, President Köhler toured the campus and expressed admiration for Weimar’s distinctive integration of health, education, and spiritual mission. Weimar University is recognized for its unique focus on comprehensive health, which President Köhler identified as being synonymous with the Church’s inspired message.
Transformative Ministry in Action
During his time on campus, President Köhler and his delegation toured key areas supporting the university’s mission and its lifestyle programs, including NEWSTART®, Depression & Anxiety Recovery, Douglas Hall, and the Weimar University Campus Church. Overall, the tour highlighted the intensity of the spiritual work being done, with staff noting that the ministry operates like “evangelism on steroids,” where decisions are made both spiritually and physically. These battles can be severe, involving high-stakes spiritual conflicts, drug addiction, and mental health crises. Dr. Neil Nedley, president of Weimar University, noted that as a result of these programs and Total Community Involvement (TCI) the University achieves an average of 100 baptisms every year, seeing many lives transformed.
The tour began in the Weimar Inn’s counseling rooms, which serve as the epicenter for intensive spiritual and physical transformation. Pastor and counselor Don Mackintosh explained the impactful and unique use of the Ten Commandments as a diagnostic tool, helping counselors rapidly identify participants’ spiritual needs. In the Hydrotherapy and Massage Rooms, the group was shown how Weimar utilizes innovative hydrotherapy methods, including “cold plunges,” where participants alternate between hot tubs (set at 102° F) and cold temperatures (55° F). These plunges have been shown to elevate brain health, improve brain circulation, and help lift depression.
President Köhler also learned how Weimar’s extensive campus grounds are utilized for outreach. The university owns 15 miles of nature trails. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a “Sabbath trail” was constructed, which introduced hundreds of community members to the Sabbath message while other local churches were closed.
The visit continued at the NEWSTART facility, home to Weimar’s physician monitored, scientifically researched lifestyle-change program. Participants attend 11 or 18-day sessions where they discover keys to reverse diabetes, improve or even reverse heart disease, lower blood pressure, lose weight, improve overall quality of life, and much more.
The delegation also toured the University’s high-tech online classrooms, noting Weimar’s expanded reach. These facilities are equipped with technology that provides real-time translation into 15 languages, enabling the university to “talk to the world”.
Preparing God’s Agents
Weimar University is dedicated to preparing professionals committed to Adventist healthcare and evangelism. President Nedley noted the institution integrates theology and health—a synergy that is often absent in other educational settings.
Weimar offers degrees in diverse fields, including Nursing, Natural Science (Pre-Med), Theology, Psychology (including an online licensed counseling program), Business (including healthcare administration), and Music. The strength of its academic programs is evident in the fact that its nursing students maintain a 100% passing rate on their NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination), and its pre-med students have a 90% acceptance rate to medial/dental school.
A Call to Divine Service
Addressing Weimar students and staff following his tour, President Köhler delivered an inspiring message emphasizing their higher calling: “You are not only working for or studying at this institution. You are God’s agents—or being prepared to be God’s agents to this world.”
He reminded them of their unique position in advancing the Church’s mission: “As health agents, you will be the ones that will stay, because you don’t have just a profession—you have a ministry. Through your ministry, the work of this Church will move forward.”
Drawing from 2 Chronicles 15:7, President Köhler charged the community to be steadfast: “Be strong therefore and let not your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.” He concluded with assurance of divine recognition: “The problems will come, the challenges will come, but your work will be rewarded. It’s not a conditional promise—it’s a real and effective promise.”
